A Must‑Visit Taste of Community in Downtown Riverhead: Olga’s

Downtown Riverhead is full of small businesses with big heart — the kind of places that turn a simple visit into a reason to come back again and again. From longtime family‑run establishments to exciting new storefronts, our downtown is built on passion, perseverance, and deep community roots.

One of those must‑visit spots is Olga’s, a welcoming café that brings bold flavors, family tradition, and a true sense of belonging to the heart of Riverhead. We sat down with Olga to learn more about the story behind the business, what makes this location special, and why it’s quickly becoming a local favorite.

A Family Dream, Years in the Making

Olga’s is more than just a neighborhood café — it’s the realization of a dream that started years ago.

“This is a family business,” Olga shares. “My mom, THE Olga, founded it. When I was nine years old, she randomly said, ‘One day I will open my own café.”

What began as a dream slowly grew into reality. The family, originally from Guatemala and with deep experience in the food industry, first opened a successful location in East Quogue. When the opportunity to open a second location in Riverhead presented itself, they didn’t hesitate.

“We saw the Riverhead location was available and jumped on that opportunity,” Olga says.

Why Downtown Riverhead?

For the Olga’s team, Downtown Riverhead felt like the right next step.

The area’s growing energy, walkable streets, and mix of longtime locals and new visitors made it the perfect place to bring their food — and their family story — to a wider audience. Like many downtown business owners, Olga sees Riverhead not just as a location, but as a community eager to support and celebrate small businesses.

Behind the Scenes at Olga’s

If you’ve stopped in on a weekend, you already know, Saturdays and Sundays are buzzing at Olga’s.

“We have so many regulars, and it’s a great balance of new people coming in too,” Olga explains.

Behind the counter, the team keeps things fresh with daily specials, careful prep, and a focus on consistency and quality that customers may not always see, but definitely taste.

What Should You Try First?

First‑time visitors often ask where to start, and Olga doesn’t hesitate with her recommendation.

Two standout menu favorites include the Guatemalan sandwich (Cheverech) and the steak tacos — both packed with flavor and rooted in the café’s cultural heritage. Whether you’re grabbing lunch on the go or sitting down to enjoy your meal, these dishes capture what makes Olga’s so special.

Lessons Learned & Milestones Worth Celebrating

Becoming a business owner wasn’t always part of the plan.

“We weren’t meant to be business owners, we learned through the journey,” Olga reflects.

Today, the business employs 20 team members, a milestone that comes with pride, responsibility, and plenty of learning along the way. Managing a growing team has been one of the biggest challenges — and one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

What’s New & How You Can Support Local

There’s more to look forward to at Olga’s. The Riverhead location recently expanded its hours to better serve the community:

  • Breakfast starts at 7 a.m.

  • Lunch begins at 10 a.m.

  • Open until 9 p.m.

The best way to support?

“Come enjoy a meal and try something new,” Olga says. Every visit helps keep local businesses thriving — and strengthens the vibrant fabric of Downtown Riverhead.

Stop By & See What Everyone’s Talking About

Olga’s is a perfect example of what makes Downtown Riverhead special: family roots, hard work, great food, and a genuine connection to the community.

Whether you’re a regular or a first‑time visitor, this is one local spot that deserves a place on your must‑visit list.
