Living Here

Nestled between the forks of eastern Long Island with a personality all its own, Downtown Riverhead is a vibrant place to hang your hat and stay awhile. New developments are blending into our historic district with the Peconic River complementing as the scenic backdrop. Grangebel Park and Riverfront Walk offer walking trails and community events throughout the year. Our seasonal community garden, street festivals and upcoming bike share program brings both residents and visitors of all ages to our humble downtown.

The Town of Riverhead and citizen-led groups actively work together to enhance downtown as a neighborhood. Projects including downtown revitalization activities, artist community, historic restoration, business development incentives, and urban renewal programs are initiated and implemented as part of ongoing community developments.

Downtown Riverhead is located within the public Riverhead Central School District. Nearby private schools include Riverhead Charter School, Peconic Community School, St. Isadore Catholic School, and St. Paul II Regional School. Riverhead is home to the eastern campus of Suffolk County Community College. SCCC’s off-campus culinary center is located on Main Street, right in the heart of DTR.

Expanding education options include East End Arts (music and cultural instruction for all ages and abilities), the Long Island Science Center (home to an extensive list of STEAM programs for today’s students and tomorrow’s innovators), and Peconic Ballet Theatre (dance instruction for all students including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities).

Experience, enjoy, learn and participate in our downtown’s extraordinarily rich cultural landscape as we build our community with art and history as a connector.
