Rooted in Riverhead, Blooming Through Generations
For more than four decades, Riverhead Flower Shop has been helping customers celebrate life's milestones, express sympathy, mark special occasions, and brighten everyday moments with beautiful floral arrangements. Today, the beloved downtown business continues that tradition under the ownership of a local family deeply connected to the Riverhead community.
For owner Peggy, flowers have always been more than a business. As the daughter of a farmer, she grew up surrounded by growing things and developed an early passion for flowers and gardening. After getting married and starting a family, she hoped to remain home with her children while contributing to the family's income. What began as a small flower farm soon blossomed into something much bigger.
When the opportunity arose to purchase Riverhead Flower Shop in 2010, she knew it was the right fit.
"I was born and raised in Riverhead, and my family always came to Riverhead Flower Shop for our floral needs," explains Peggy. "The business already had a wonderful reputation, but we saw opportunities to refresh the brand and help it grow into the future."
Originally established in 1980 by Tom and Dolly Corrigan at the corner of Main Street and Union Avenue, Riverhead Flower Shop had become a community institution. After taking over the business, Peggy spent several years operating from the original location before making the decision to relocate to its current home in the historic Woolworth building in the heart of downtown Riverhead.
The move offered a more centrally located storefront, a safer environment for employees, and a sustainable space that better suited the company's long-term goals.
While much has changed over the years, one thing has remained constant: a commitment to serving the community.
In fact, every member of the Riverhead Flower Shop team is local.
"Everyone who works here comes from families that have lived in Riverhead for generations," says Peggy. "That's what makes our shop and our downtown so special. We know many of our customers personally, and many of their families have been shopping downtown for generations as well."
That local connection is shown in every aspect of the business.
A typical day begins early, with schedules being organized, orders reviewed, flowers processed, delivery routes planned, proposals written, and customer inquiries answered. Behind the scenes, the family's flower farm adds another layer to the operation, providing many of the blooms used in their designs throughout the year.
From tulips and daffodils in early spring to peonies, dahlias, and dozens of other seasonal varieties, the farm allows Riverhead Flower Shop to offer exceptionally fresh flowers that are incorporated into everyday arrangements, weddings, and sympathy work.
"It's a tremendous source of pride for us," Peggy says. "We love being able to create unique floral designs using flowers we've grown ourselves."
But while beautiful flowers may bring customers through the door, Peggy believes it's customer service that keeps them coming back.
"What makes our shop unique is the experience people receive when they call or visit us," she says. "We treat our customers like family, educate them about their options, and help them choose arrangements that are right for their needs."
That philosophy has earned the business a loyal customer base and a steady stream of five-star reviews praising both the quality of the arrangements and the care provided by the staff.
As Riverhead Flower Shop looks ahead, Peggy hopes residents continue supporting locally owned businesses throughout the community.
"The best thing people can do is shop local, and do it consistently," she says. "Support the coffee shops, farm stands, boutiques, and family-owned businesses that work hard every day to serve our community. Those dollars stay here and help make Riverhead stronger."
For Riverhead Flower Shop, those values of community, quality, and personal service are at the heart of everything they do. It's a tradition that began generations ago and continues to bloom right in the center of downtown Riverhead.
