‘Downtown Double’ Dual Impact Fundraiser
#downtowndouble

(Riverhead, NY...January 30, 2021) –– The Riverhead Business Improvement District [BID] and Peconic Bay Medical Center, a member of Northwell Health [PBMC], are reuniting for another double-impact fundraiser aimed at supporting hospital workers fighting on the frontline as well as downtown Riverhead’s small businesses, all facing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The plan: raise funds through public donations, purchase Riverhead BID’s new Downtown Dollars gift cards (unveiled December 2020), then distribute the cards to employees actively working on campus at Peconic Bay Medical Center. The gift card donation will allow essential staff working all shifts and departments at the hospital to obtain meals, goods and services from participating Riverhead BID district businesses and all 1,490 active employees will be included in the raffle.

This is the second ‘Downtown Double’ fundraiser shared by the BID and PBMC. In the spring of 2020, the team raised $32,911 and purchased 658 fifty-dollar gift cards from downtown restaurants and through a lottery process distributed them to hospital employees.

"The heroic work being done by the staff at the Medical Center would not be possible without the generous support from our community," said Amy Loeb, Executive Director of Peconic Bay Medical Center. "We are thankful for all those who participate in programs like this to support our healthcare heroes."

The effort is organized by Steven Shauger (President, Riverhead BID), Kristy Verity (Executive Director, Riverhead BID), Darrien Garay (Special Gift Officer, Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation), and Maureen Brady-Curzio (Advisor, Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation). Gift card information, including a list of participating businesses, can be found at downtownriverhead.org

“Downtown businesses have shown tremendous resiliency during this pandemic and the support of our community has made an invaluable positive impact,” Steven Shauger, President, Riverhead Business Improvement District. “Downtown Riverhead is looking to come out of this stronger than ever, and The Downtown Double Fundraiser provides the perfect platform for community members to support both our frontline essential workers, and also the business owners that make Downtown Riverhead the great place that it is.”

The Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation has generously donated $10,000 to kick-start this year’s program (the Foundation also made an initial donation of $5,000 to the 2020 campaign).

“In this historic crisis in America, it is imperative to honor, applaud and show our deep appreciation to our frontline heroes and angels,’” Richard and Mary Morrison. “Respectfully, we thank them from the bottom of our

hearts.”

Tax-deductible donations may be made online at

Checks should be made out to PBMC Foundation and mailed to PBMC Foundation Office 1 Heroes Way Riverhead, New York 11901

Riverhead Will Not See a 2020 New Year’s Eve Fireworks Display

(Riverhead, NY...December 2020) –– The Riverhead Business Improvement District [Riverhead BID] announces the cancelation of their proposed December 31 2020 New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

The permit application was presented at the Town of Riverhead work session on Thursday, December 3, 2020. Following the presentation, BID President, Steven Shauger consulted with both Peconic Bay Medical Center Northwell Health’s President & CEO, Andrew Mitchell, and the town board to address the concerns of increased COVID spread and fear of saturating the local health care system.

“Considering the safety of our community is of utmost importance. Understanding that this is a challenging time, we must explore and respect the opinions and concerns of our community leaders,” Steven Shauger. “We have supported our health care heroes throughout this pandemic and will continue to keep their well-being at the top of our priority list. Sadly, an event of this kind is just not doable right now.”

The Downtown Riverhead fireworks display was originally planned for July 2020 during the annual Alive on 25 street festival. Due to planning and purchasing months in advance, $12,000.00 was paid in full to Santore World Famous Fireworks. Upon notice of cancelation, Santore issued a 2020 credit. The BID rescheduled the display to its annual Holiday Bonfire partnered with the Lion’s Club Parade scheduled for December 12, 2020, which was later canceled due to COVID concerns, prompting the BID to reconsider the date of December 31, 2020, for the fireworks display. Due to unsettling feedback, the display is now postponed to 2021. Santore has agreed to prorate the credit to 2021.

“We’d like to thank Mr. Mitchell for his communication, concern, and honest feedback, Santore fireworks for their patience and agreement to deliver thrills in 2021, and the public for voicing their opinion - which helps us to determine the best course of action for Downtown Riverhead,” Steven Shauger. “The BID continues to envision fun things for the new year, and we aim to bring excitement back to town once it’s safe to do so.”

Downtown Riverhead Plans for a Safe Halloween

(Riverhead, NY...October 7, 2020) –– The Riverhead Business Improvement District [Riverhead BID] announces the cancellation of trick or treating, coffin races, and Halloween parade planned for October 23-25, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Downtown Riverhead’s Halloween Fest is a special tradition that showcases the talents and enthusiasm of our community, but it would be impossible to socially distance all participants and stay within crowd limitations,” Kristy Verity, Executive Director, Riverhead BID. “We regretfully announce that we cannot host Halloween Fest as we have in years past.”

The public can still take part in transforming Downtown Riverhead into a spooky and enchanting land in honor of All Hallows’ Eve. The BID is hosting its annual Halloween lamp post display, and all are invited to register and enhance Main Street by decorating one (or more) of 49 available poles with Halloween and fall decor. Those interested may register online at downtownriverhead.org.

“While limited by current restrictions on events, this is an activity that can still occur. We are focused on ways to help our community enjoy special occasions and will continue as many traditions as we safely can,” Kristy Verity. “Decorating Main Street’s lamp posts every year brings whimsy to our town and we aren’t letting that go.”

Downtown Riverhead restaurants, retail, hotel, marinas, and the aquarium are open for business and continue to offer outdoor and indoor services at reduced capacity and with safety measures in place. Businesses will be decorated and offering Halloween-themed specials, to be updated on the BID’s social media and website downownriverhead.org

The Town of Riverhead’s Recreation Department will host a ‘Trunk or Treat’ drive-thru on October 24, 2020, from 5-6:30 pm at Stotzy park. Those interested in hosting a ‘trunk’ or attending the event should visit https://www.riverheadrecreation.net/.

Riverhead BID Launches Dine on 25 Al Fresco Summer Dining Experience

(Riverhead, NY...July 14, 2020) –– The Riverhead Business Improvement District [Riverhead BID] is reimagining their annual Alive on 25 street fair celebration in light of the COVID-19 pandemic with the launch of Dine on 25 . Historic Main Street will close to vehicle traffic to allow downtown to transform into an al fresco dining area for local establishments on select Thursday evenings. On July 16, August 13, and August 27, diners with reservations can spread out safely and enjoy food and drink from participating restaurants, breweries, and the distillery.

“We have seen how quickly these businesses have had to change their operations to adapt throughout the pandemic,” shares Riverhead BID president Steven Shauger. “We’re now adapting, too, to keep Riverhead alive and vibrant throughout the summer. Dine on 25 is an innovative, solution-based event series designed to help our local eateries and downtown businesses recover losses after the COVID-19 shutdown.”

Eateries, breweries, and the new Montauk Distilling Company will offer seating al fresco on sidewalks and in the street, as well as establishments already offering indoor and outdoor dining at their respective locations. Participating businesses can be found online at downtownriverhead.org/dine-on-25.

“Alive on 25 has been a family event that the east end looks forward to every summer,” says Riverhead BID executive director Kristy Verity. “Everything we do will look different now. It goes without saying that the past few months have been difficult for everyone, but we’ve seen how the community has come together, stronger, to support one another. We’re thankful for the support of the Town of Riverhead, Riverhead Chamber of Commerce, and Riverhead Police Department in the planning of this event, along with our sponsor, sPower for their generosity.”

As Governor Cuomo’s phase four reopening plan for New York State is in effect, the Riverhead BID strongly encourages businesses and diners alike to continue practice social distancing. Reservations will be required for these events, as will facial coverings. Patrons will only be served when seated. A full list of safety measures can be found at downtownriverhead.org/dine-on-25.

“We want to remind and assure our community that this is not a street festival or gathering event. Dine on 25 is an extension of our Main Street restaurant’s serving areas, simply a chance to enjoy some food or drinks while seated outdoors. We are following every safety protocol and working closely with our state and local enforcement agencies under current regulations,” Kristy Verity.

(Riverhead, NY...April 7, 2020) –– The Riverhead Business Improvement District [Riverhead BID] is sponsoring a new double-impact fundraiser aimed to assist hospital workers fighting on the frontline of the COVID-19 crisis, and to support the work and livelihood of downtown restaurants that are struggling to stay open amid the nationwide ‘shelter-in place’ order. The plan: buy gift cards from eateries in downtown Riverhead, then distribute the cards to employees at Peconic Bay Medical Center, Northwell Health. The gift card donation will allow all essential staff working all shifts and departments at the hospital campus to obtain take out meals for their families from participating Riverhead restaurants.

The effort is being organized by Steven Shauger (President, Riverhead BID), Kristy Verity (Executive Director, Riverhead BID), Darrien Garay (Special Gift Officer, Peconic Bay Medical Center) and Maureen Brady-Curzio (Director of Development, Peconic Bay Medical Center).

“We are all in this together. This program is an opportunity for our community to make a positive impact on both healthcare workers and Downtown Restaurants that are being heavily impacted by this pandemic.” Steven Shauger, BID President “Things will eventually get better, and donations to this cause will support our heroic healthcare workers and also help the restaurants we all know and love to weather the storm and be there when the dust settles.

Public donations are being recruited to fund the meal program. 100% of donations go directly to local restaurants feeding frontline workers. Volunteers take no administrative fee and the crowd-funding program has been set up directly through Northwell Health, eliminating processing fees normally collected by for-profit online donation companies. Advertising and promotion fees are sponsored by the Riverhead BID.

The gift cards will then be distributed by the medical center through a raffle system - every active employee of the hospital will be included in the raffle, from ICU to medical records, environmental services etc. Gift cards will be mailed home to employees.

"The heroic work being done by the staff at the Medical Center would not be possible without the generous support from our community," Andrew Mitchell, President and CEO of Peconic Bay Medical Center. "We are thankful for all those who participate in programs like this to support our healthcare heroes."

At a time when so much is unknown and so much has been stripped away, humanity has peaked and Riverhead is more united and wholesome than ever.”

Downtown Riverhead Business Improvement District Launches New Website

(Riverhead, NY...January, 2020) –– The Riverhead Business Improvement District [Riverhead BID] announced the launch of its next-generation brand identity and website ‘Downtown Riverhead’ [DTR - https://www.downtownriverhead.org/] focused on promoting the advantages of visiting, doing business and residing in DTR. These changes come at a time when the downtown district is evolving and expanding its global reach as an opportunity zone. The BID has taken the lead on promoting downtown businesses, venues, events, properties and services via a more modern and engaging user interface with responsive design that adapts to all web platforms, including mobile, and will be regularly updated with content imported from social media and public relations avenues.  The new website was developed over a four-month period by NY/CA-based racelbosworth.com, following a formal bidding process.

Under the direction of the BID’s Executive Director, Kristy Verity (who began with the BID July 2019) the organization is broadening it’s footprint across digital and physical channels to more easily offer support to district members, directories to visitors and resources to current and future residents.

"We couldn't be more excited to launch as ‘Downtown Riverhead’ and feel it now fully reflects all the good things happening downtown," said Kristy Verity, Executive Director of the Riverhead BID. "Whether you are visiting for an event, just having dinner and taking in a show, or are lucky enough to do business, work, or live here - Riverhead offers a tremendous range of opportunities. The BID’s goal is to make it easy for people to discover them all."

Beyond spotlighting key attributes and assets of Downtown -- which includes everything from Riverhead’s history, hospitality, and the arts, the website also sheds light on the BID’s mission, goals and activities; among them ongoing beautification programs, business support, driving economic development, and hosting popular events like Alive on 25, Cardboard Boat Race, Halloween Fest, and Holiday Bonfire. The site also encourages and enables volunteers and sponsors to engage with the BID, with the goal of increasing momentums.

“There’s been a great deal of hard work, brainstorming, positivity and collaboration on this project – both internally and with Ms. Bosworth,” said Kristy Verity. “We are confident the public will like what they see and people can expect more to come such as themed itineraries for a day in town, business spotlights, community calendar to include events hosted by local venues, kids corner and business resources - as our main goal is to support the soul of Riverhead and the hardworking people who show up everyday to bring it to life.”

Those interested in visiting the new website can locate it online at downtownriverhead.org. Visitors to the site can also sign up for the BID's e-newsletter and help further its mission utilizing the form in the ‘Contact Us’ section of the website. Users are encouraged to engage with the BID on Facebook @downtownriverheadbid and Instagram @downtownriverhead

Performances by local theater groups (Peconic Ballet Theater performs ‘Thriller’) and talented community members will entertain; parade cash prizes for Best Costume, Best Decorated Car etc. will be awarded by the Downtown Riverhead BID

Due to popular demand, Reflextions Riverhead: Art in the Park walkable light art and fire display will return with the addition of Halloween-themed sights beginning at dusk [6pm] at Grangebel Park. Scary warlocks, witches and dragons will mingle alongside princesses and dogs in costume to take their selfies in the land of illuminated fun and fright. While waiting for the parade participants to line up [6-7pm], viewers are encouraged to walk the magical exhibit as well as explore and dine at local restaurants offering food and drink specials all weekend.

Completing the evening [8pm] adults are invited to a Masquerade Ball at the Long Island Aquarium where masks and costumes meet for open bar, DJ and dancing with prizes awarded for Best Costume and Masquerade Attire.

“In Riverhead, we work hard to offer extraordinary free community events throughout the seasons. Halloween Fest is a wonderful Downtown celebration that delivers a fun, safe Halloween experience to our town and we welcome everyone to visit for an experience unlike any other on Long Island,” Kristy Verity, Executive Director, Downtown Riverhead Business Improvement District. “Not only bonding both forks, Riverhead is flourishing as the Eastern Long Island mecca to Eat, Stay, Play. Our downtown offers rich history, parks, riverfront, family friendly activities, and hotels and restaurants that embrace east end living and invite Long Island tourism. Like all of our events, Halloween Fest aims to give something to everyone, and we invite all to come dressed in their Halloween best for a great day Downtown.”

Local business owners and community volunteers have ‘dressed’ Riverhead’s Main Street for the occasion, [October 15-31, 2019] decorating lamp posts along the trick or treat and parade trail with fall and Halloween accessories, getting the community excited for the ghoulish game day!

Riverhead’s Halloween festivities will take place October 25-27, 2019

Riverhead Rocks it’s Downtown Illumination Exhibit for Two More Nights

#ReflextionsRiverhead

(Riverhead, NY...September, 2019) –– Downtown Riverhead lights up for two remaining nights of REFLEXTIONS: ART IN THE PARK; the illuminated, walkable, interactive art and performance experience located in Milton L. Burns Park [Grangebel Park] on Peconic Avenue in Downtown Riverhead. A scenic setting along the riverwalk, REFLEXTIONS light art and sculpture exhibit utilizes the park to host a free, accessible public art space where reflective pieces shine by day, and light at night by fire neon and LED lights.

“REFLEXTIONS brings together people of all ages, communities and interests. It’s a wonderful place for families and friends to spend an evening together, enjoying music and art for free, in the scenic riverfront setting of our beautiful downtown,” states Diane Tucci, Riverhead Downtown Revitalization Committee and #RiverheadRocks project leader. “Visitors can walk the exhibit by daylight, then grab a meal on Main Street and return to see the exhibits glowing at night. There’s something for everyone.”

“This is a must-see event! The most unique light art and sculpture experience on Long Island,” says Bryan Deluca, executive director and cofounder of, East End Tourism Alliance and REFLEXTIONS Coordinator. “Getting the community involved and participating in the experience is our vision for the natural evolution of REFLEXTIONS.”

“Join the thousands of visitors who have enjoyed this unique experience” says Bob Kern co-creator and Riverhead Chamber of Commerce president.

Displays include whimsical umbrellas swaying in air, a storage container repurposed into a walk-through neon blacklight tunnel with a glowing ‘under the sea’ theme, floating and suspended water exhibits, and metal sculptures lit by fire at night. Most pieces utilize recycled household items, such as CDs attached to a massive fish to give the appearance of scales reflecting in the sunlight. The ongoing community art project RIVERHEAD ROCKS continues, as people are invited to paint large rocks with colors, patterns and inspiring messages which are then placed inside three dimensional metal letters spelling RIVERHEAD. The welded cage letters are 40” high and stretch nearly 30’ long. Rocks and paint are available to the public at the event for a $5 donation. Musicians take the Grangebel Park stage at 7pm, playing to the crowd as they walk the exhibit (Sept 14, Michael Friedell on acoustic Guitar. Sept 28, local high school students Lily Kutner and Friends, followed by Flamenco performance by Jonathan Fritz). Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and spend time enjoying these multifaceted events.

Many of the pieces were fabricated by neon artist Clayton Orehek, both a sculptor and co-creator/curator of this unique public art display. The organizers of the light art show look forward to Clayton contributing more pieces next year, as well.

REFLEXTIONS will be on display Saturday September 14 and Saturday, September 28, 2019. Full details, visit: http://www.artintheparkreflections.com/

Reflextions has been supported by the Town of Riverhead, Riverhead Business Improvement District and and made possible with funding from I LOVE NEW YORK, East End Tourism Alliance, Suffolk County Dept. of Economic Development, East End Arts Council, Huntington Arts Council, and sponsored by Triple 5, The Riverhead Chamber of Commerce, Tanger Outlets Riverhead, Riverhead Rotary, Conifer, and Twomey Latham Shea, Kelly, Dubin & Quartararo LLP.
